Theme show: Trade and Colonies - the Golden Age of Sail Show

duration: 2006.06.27 -- 2007.02.28

Following on the theme of the evolution of ships throughout history, after the theme show of "Boats of the Ancient Times" in 2004, the YM Oceanic Culture & Art Museum will be presenting the story of voyages by famous sailing vessels between A.D. 1600-1800. The new theme show : "Trade and Colonies - the Golden Age of Sail" scheduled for the second half of 2006 will take you on a new journey in oceanic culture.

The focus of this show will be divided into two major areas: the maritime competition between the major European sea-going powers, and the development of Taiwan in maritime history. The continent of Europe was torn by numerous wars during the early 17th century. Due to advances in maritime technology and the increase in geographical understanding, European coastal countries began their rapid expansion overseas.

The discovery of various exotic foreign goods led to the development of Europe's economy. It was a famous period known for high-adventures and exploits on the sea and the progression from trade expansion to the conflicts over the possession of colonies has left countless legends and tales. So bring your dreams along and follow us back to the past to set sail on a treasure hunting voyage into history with famous men of the sea.

The descriptions of the European sea powers include the decline of Spain, Holland, and France and England's rise as a colonial power, the beginning of the immigration to the New World, the expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic and the discovery of Africa - the dawn of the dark continent. As for the section on the island of Taiwan, the descriptions begin from the evolution of the island's name, then proceed to elaborate on the Spanish and Dutch influence on the development of northern Taiwan in "Keelung" taking advantage of the location of the YM Oceanic Culture & Art Museum so that the residents born in Keelung can understand more about the glorious past of Keelung; the busiest port in Taiwan. In addition, the fruits of hard work by several researchers on local culture will also be exhibited, and these include a model of Fort San Salvador and comprehensive historical information on Keelung; a priceless hand-drawn map of Keelung from ancient times and other maps of Taiwan in the old days drawn by the Dutch and so forth.

The China Merchants Bureau's history is presented here because it was the predecessor to Yang Ming Marine Transport.

The CMB was the first shipping company in China and was founded in 1872 during the Qing Dynasty by the Imperial Minister of Commerce Li Hong-Chang. Due to the Qing Dynasty's defeats in various wars, the loss of shipping rights led to foreign control of its coastal and river routes. Domestic small shipping was simply no match for these foreign competitors. To avoid foreign monopolies of critical shipping routes, he submitted a proposal to the Empress Dowager Cixi to form a shipping company funded by private investors. This became known as the China Merchants Bureau. The CMB marked the start of Chinese shipping history in modern times and was a witness to China's modern history as well. During the Sino-Japanese War it was the largest shipping company in China, playing an important part in support of military logistics. Its ships were even used as blockades in rivers to delay the Japanese advance and win time for the Nationalist forces to withdraw.

With aid of technology, all of our historical records have been projected onto an outsized book .Wave your hand to turn the pages!
